Nice Point: Over at the Agitator, Brooke takes a closer look at Andrew Sullivan's minor huff over Britney Spears's brief marriage. Got that? Well, briefly, Sully is cheesed that he can't have an old-fashioned, committed, monogamous marriage -- the kind that would warm the heart of any conservative who didn't know the sexes involved -- while Britney can make a mockery of the institution in a Vegas chapel. Now Brooke:
Sullivan makes no mention at all of the most legitmate use of the Britney Spears debacle for gay rights: Britney Spears had the right to get wasted and get hitched to whatever prospective beau happened to be around whereas a gay drunk person does not have that right. Sullivan's point should have been that gay couples should have the same right as straight couples to aspire to that image of a traditional marriage (as close as they can muster) and they should have the same right to utterly fail in that pursuit, as so many straight couples have.
Exactly. Gays of America, don't sell yourselves short: Not only do you deserve access to the institution, you deserve to defile it, too.
