Rumblin', bumblin'...ditto: Rush Limbaugh is joining ESPN as an NFL commentator, starting this September. I can't wait for the protests by Martha Burke. I gave up listening to Rush a while ago, more because I find him obnoxious rather than wrong (though he can certainly be that). But will it work?

It might, as long as they stick to brief commentary. The plan is for Rush to do an opinion piece (football only, I presume) for each show, which sounds tolerable and maybe even fun. But he will also do three "Rush Challenge" segments where, I presume, he tells football people they don't know beans about football. This sounds like a trainwreck.

Rush divides his three hour daily radio show into three basic activities. Giving his opinion about topics of his choice, taking calls from suck up fans who want to hear their voice on the radio and get a pat on the head for agreeing with el Rushbo, and tearing to shreds/cutting off/hanging up on callers who disagree. A lot of people tune in to hear him tear into people whose opinions they don't share. But these are not people they sit down to watch every Sunday morning. They're not going to like hearing Rush slam the Boomer, Steve Young, and Tom Jackson (Michael Irvin's another story).

I don't think it will be as bad as Dennis Miller's ill fated MNF stint, only because Rush doesn't have to sit uncomfortably for three hours trying to make jokes comparing Jerry Jones to Louis XIV. Less is more, in this case. But understated is not Rush's MO.
